About this campaign
Historic Mission San Gabriel was founded September 8, 1771, the fourth of the 21 California Missions founded by the Spanish Franciscan Friars. In the early morning hours of July 11, 2020, a "four-alarm" structure fire destroyed most of the roof and much of the interior of the church, including the newly restored pews. Renovation was already underway to prepare for the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the Mission in September 2021.
The restoration is underway; at this time a temporary roof has been placed and the debris from the damaged roof and pews removed. The next steps will include assessments of the interior paint to prepare for the restoration of the walls. The replacement of the roof is anticipated to begin approximately February 2021.
Supporters
The Missions must be saved they are an important part of our heritage. They tell the story of how we came to be. And if that story is not perfect, we still honor the symbolism they stand for NOW.
To help preserve this historical mission
I am a member of the organization and I want to support CA history. Many parts of our country are tearing down statutes, memorials, etc. I don't want that to happen in CA.
I think this is a wonderful organization with great leadership and I will gladly donate to a group that cares about the history and beauty of our state and nation. Thank you
NDGW project
in 2014, I was blessed with helping Mission San Gabriel. I went back to NDGW and presented a request for help. I was call that I could come and pick up a check for some work that needed to be done. I was very happy.
I am a member of the Native Daughters and love the missions. I have visited all but one. Getting this mission repaired is important to me even though I live way up in Eureka.
