About this campaign

About Sea Otter Awareness Week

Sea Otter Awareness Week falls on the last week in September and is an annual recognition of the vital role that sea otters play in the nearshore ecosystem. Each year, zoos, aquariums, natural history museums, marine institutions, and the public participate in various events and activities highlighting sea otters and their natural history and the various conservation issues sea otters are faced with.

Many people are unaware of the remarkable recovery the Southern sea otter population has made over the past century. After being nearly decimated by fur traders in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Southern sea otter population has increased to several thousand otters today. However, there is still a long road to complete recovery for this vital, keystone species. In fact, southern sea otters remain protected as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

One of the biggest threats to the sea otter and all marine life is pollution from disposable plastics in the ocean. According to the Plastic Ocean Foundation, more than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year, and a large portion of that plastic is disposable plastic beverage bottles. Not only do plastic bottles pollute the ocean and put marine wildlife at risk of death from plastic consumption, they also require around 6 times as much water per bottle to produce the bottle as there is in the container. The answer is simple -- switch to reusable water bottles!

Sea Otter Awareness Week is a collaborative celebration of our furry friends, and an opportunity to raise awareness, promote conservation, and advance on the shared mission to save the sea otter! Get your Sea Otter Awareness Week 2017 water bottle today to help raise awareness about sea otters, reduce pollution, and preserve our amazing oceans!

About Friends of the Sea Otter

Friends of the Sea Otter (FSO), founded in 1968, is an advocacy group dedicated to actively working with state and federal agencies, scientists, educators, and the public to maintain, increase and broaden the current protections for the sea otter, a species currently protected by state and federal laws and having two populations on the Endangered Species list. We wish to inspire the public at large about the otters’ unique behavior and habitat.
