Detroit Tree Planting w/ Smokey the Bear

A little about the event: April 30th 2016 was a cool overcast spring day along Outer Drive in Detroit, Michigan. The weather brought out over 30 HRC employees and family members looking for a chance to escape their homes after nearly 6 months of winter. They generously volunteered their Saturday morning to help The Greening of Detroit plant trees along West Outer Drive in the rebounding City of Detroit. This is HRC’s fifth volunteer partnership with the Greening of Detroit, which on this morning included over 200 volunteers from around Metro Detroit. HRC’s volunteers, equipped with shovels, rakes and pick axes, dug holes for the trees, extracted the trees from their containers and placed them in the holes. They were then backfilled and protected with a small berm and mulch. The program continues to water the trees for 1-2 years after planting.
