About this campaign

Too often, we are scared to share our stories out of fear of judgment and the stigma that exists around talking about mental health. We embrace MHA's founder’s message of sharing our stories and experiences to help others know that they are not alone – thus creating a movement to FIGHT IN THE OPEN.

Wearing a t-shirt about mental health may not seem like much, but sometimes a conversation starter is all someone needs to know they are not alone.

This exclusive design was created for Mental Health America by Cleveland-based artist Derek Hess, who openly shares his experience with mental illness and chooses to Fight in the Open. Both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the famous Louvre in Paris have Hess’ art in their permanent collection.

Mental Health America (MHA) is the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and to promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. Much of our work is guided by the Before Stage 4 (B4Stage4) philosophy – that mental health conditions should be treated long before they reach the most critical points in the disease process.

When we share our stories and experiences, we help others know they are not alone helping them to understand the importance in addressing their mental health earlier, before a point of crisis. Check out our video to learn more about our Before Stage 4 philosophy.
