Angie Maxfield's Cancer Journey
At the end of this May, a sore like a canker sore developed on Angie’s tongue. We treated it for several weeks as if it was a canker sore. Unfortunately, nothing over the counter seemed to work. The sore began to grow and become more and more painful, affecting Angie’s ability to eat. So we chose to visit Urgent Care. After a few failed attempts to treat it through Urgent Care, they mentioned I should find a doctor to perform a biopsy to find out what exactly what we are dealing with. This is when I chose to make an appointment with Midwest Ear Nose and Throat. Upon the first visit we were advised to come back and get a biopsy. We are now sitting in late August. The 2nd visit a biopsy of my tongue and neck were taken and found out it was cancerous. At this time a CT scan of the head and neck was performed, along with a PET scan. The scans revealed that there was cancer spots found in the tongue and on the right side of the neck in the Lymph Nodes. Midwest Ear Nose and Throat had to refer me onto Dr. Spanos. We had several visits with the physicians and planned to remove the cancer and perform reconstruction of the tongue, as she was going to lose half of it. Angie had surgery on October 14th, surgery took over 10 hours. The surgery included removing over half of her tongue, taking a flap off her arm to rebuild the tongue and then taking a graph of skin off of her leg to repair the arm. She spent 10 days in the hospital. Angie came home and began the recovery process. After the recovery time, a plan of Chemo and Radiation was schedule. A couple of weeks went by, she then went back to the hospital for a routine checkup, during that visit she started not feeling well. Angie was sent to the ER immediately, after further tests, it was found that she had Sepsis. Angie was admitted to the hospital for another 7 days. During this visit, it was found that the cancer has come back. We immediately made plans for chemo to start. As soon as Angie was well enough to start chemo, she had the first round. We had another CT scan performed of the lower body, this revealed that the cancer has spread, there are spots found in the liver and lungs. A biopsy was performed on the liver in January 2025, and it confirmed cancer cells are forming in the liver. Currently Angie is on Immunotherapy and chemo treatments, as the cancer has spread too much for radiation.

At this time, Angie is living each day to the fullest and appreciates all the love, thoughts and prayers. She considers each and every one of you as family and could not go through this journey without you!
