It was late July when Deputy Mindy Pietras spotted a stray on the side of a road. She could tell something wasn’t right with this dog and when she finished her shift, returned to find a dehydrated, malnourished, puppy with a limp.
The Pietras family brought him to their vet, who determined this pup to be between 16 - 20 weeks old and suffering from an irreparably broken leg in need of an amputation. Unfortunately, this stray pup was not wearing identification tags and had not been microchipped, so the Pietras dubbed him Joe.
Three different rescues declined to take him on because he would need his surgeries would cost between $1,200 - $3,800 for the operation. Luckily, the Pietras’s vet recommended Helping Hands Animal Hospital in Richmond, VA. They were willing to perform the amputation for $755 however, post-op expenses & recovery care would be extra.
Through sharing Joe's story, Canine Community Outreach of North Carolina raised surgical, sterilization, microchip, and post-op funds and provided travel accommodations to Richmond, VA. Joe has since made a full recovery and has found a loving home through Paws for Life.
Joe's story reminds us that dog rescue takes a village. Thanks to monetary donations, caring volunteers willing to share their home, and social influence, this deserving guy went on to complete a family who couldn't imagine life without him.

Meet Harvey, a three-year-old bulldog/boxer mix with a cheerful disposition and a keen eye for fashion accessories. His person asked his coworker to watch him for a few days. A few days turned into months. When Harvey's petsitter approached his person about taking him back, his person expressed that he no longer wanted a dog and couldn't care for him.
Harvey's needed a lot of medical help: an eye removal, treatment for anal polyps and heartworms, in addition to sterilization & vaccination.
With the cooperation of Harvey's guardian and an area foster family, Canine Community Outreach of North Carolina. was able to fund a large portion of these required procedures through That's a Wrap!, a fundraising effort that included photos with Santa, gift wrapping and an auction.
Due to the care Harvey received, this sweet dog became adoptable through Cause for Paws and found his forever family just in time for Christmas.
Dogs like Harvey are why we do what we do. Cheers to second chances!

Trixie is an 11-pound dachshund whose human mom suddenly passed away. Trixie found herself in a less-than-ideal situation with a family member, where she spent most of her days in a crate not much bigger than her body. A rescuer was given permission to re-home Trixie.
Though she was overall relatively healthy and heart worm negative, Trixie's first EVER vet visit revealed a substantial mammary tumor and urgent need for both the removal of the tumor and a spay surgery with blood work and x-rays - procedures totaling over $1,250. Trixie's rescuer raised $950 by asking everyone she knew for donations. Canine Community Outreach of NC covered the remaining $302.51 balance.

Why should you Spay & Neuter Yo' Damn Pets?
Spaying or neutering your pet not only reduces the pet population, it also alleviates the homeless pet crisis. Millions of healthy dogs and cats are euthanized every year simply because there aren't enough homes to go around.
100% of proceeds raised through the sale of these shirts will allow Canine Community Outreach of NC to work with local shelters and mobile veterinary clinics to provide spay and neuter vouchers for local dog owners.
