About this campaign

The Latin colony of Cosa (modern Ansedonia), located about 140km up the Italian coast from Rome, was founded by Romans in 273 BCE. Excavations on this site, which is integral to the understanding of ancient Roman colonial life, first began in 1948, but several areas of the colony remain unexcavated. Excavations have therefore been recently renewed under the auspices of Bryn Mawr, and the University of Tuebingen. Because it is cheaper to live off site, we need your help funding our transportation to and from the excavations daily during this 70th anniversary year!

Excavations have therefore been recently renewed under the auspices of Bryn Mawr, and the University of Tuebingen. Current excavations focus on the small bath complex never investigated prior to 2013. Excavation goals includedetermining the overall layout of the complex, reconstructing the chronology of its construction, and dissecting the Roman engineering techniques employed to build large load bearing walls, impressive concrete vaults, and water tight rooms. Because it is cheaper to live off site, we need your help funding our transportation to and from the excavations daily. We will need five rental cars to take our full staff, comprised of American graduate and undergraduate students, and our tools to and from site every morning and afternoon. Your contribution will help cover the rental costs as well as gas money during this 70th anniversary year!
