Dentists for Black Lives Matter Movement

Hi! We’re Mary, Brooke, and Mariam, three students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.

As I’m sure many of you also feel, our hearts grieve from the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless other Black Americans who have had their lives senselessly taken from them. We are committed to supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement. As future dentists, we believe it is essential to treat all patients with the highest standard of care, regardless of their backgrounds and identities. However, this ideology must transcend outside of the clinic as well. We must speak up for the indignities and injustices our Black brothers and sisters face on a daily basis, and not only do our parts to end it, but also support their futures.
Just as healthcare should be a right for all, we believe a proper education and an equal opportunity to rise to one’s potential should be as well. For these reasons, we have chosen to donate all profits of this fundraiser to the Institution for Development of African American Youth: a Philadelphia-based non-profit committed to educating and empowering low income, at-risk urban youth. IDAAY offers several programs to help combat social disparities and injustices. These include programs to prepare teens for college, provide support to young fathers, open opportunities to explore academic interests, and many more.

As a dental community, we can help to provide the building blocks this country needs to end social and racial inequalities. We stand together in unity, love, and a promising future.
