Heartland Humane Society of Missouri is a 501(c)3 non-profit group of dedicated foster homes that gives abandoned, abused, and unwanted animals another chance for a loving permanent home through our adoption program. We reduce pet overpopulation in our community through collaboration with veterinarians, animal welfare agencies, supportive individuals, and private organizations by providing affordable spay/neuter procedures and humane education. Heartland Humane Society of Missouri is funded solely by adoption fees, donations, corporate matching donations, fundraising events, grants and tributes; we do not receive government assistance or tax dollars. Donations, fundraisers and grants are critical to our operations and ability to provide our foster animals with the very best care and treatment that they need in order to be adopted to families of their own. We are 100% volunteer-based and do not have any paid staff, so 98% of the funds that we receive are allocated towards three primary areas – veterinary care, medical supplies and pet food. The remaining 2% is dedicated to operational costs such as maintenance of our website, newsletter mailings, and license fees.

Heartland Humane Society of Missouri rescues and finds homes for about 500 dogs and cats each year through weekend adoptions at the O’Fallon MO Petsmart store. We also maintain the store’s Luv-A-Pet cat center and place cats there for additional exposure and adoption seven days a week. In addition, Heartland re-homes cats and dogs through other adoption events and venues in the area, as well as through private adoptions generated by our website or by word of mouth.

The past two years have been especially tough for our rescue. Adoptions have decreased overall, but intake continues to increase because more and more animals are finding themselves homeless and in need of help! Strays off the streets, animals on death row at shelters, and pets who are surrendered by their families for various reasons... it never ends yet we aren't letting it stop us. We will continue to do everything that we can to help the animals who so desperately need us!
