About this campaign

This t-shirt design was inspired by all of the performative allyship I see in regards to Black Lives Matter (including my own). It goes with a song (click here to listen: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/jakedester/im-a-good-person-t-shirt) I wrote called "I'm A Good Person T-shirt" that wryly sheds light on the issue of virtue signaling.

It's my hope that the fundraiser and the song will boost awareness about the shortcomings of performative allyship, and that folks—mainly well-meaning white folks—will assess that it's not enough to simply say that you are good.

Anti-racism must be a sustained pursuit of uncovering and taking apart hidden prejudices, and, with raised awareness, slowly improving one's actions and thinking in their day-to-day life to effect change.

A bit of the story back of this:

I didn't really know what to do. I asked and I prayed and I listened to activists and Black people who have been gracious enough to share their perspectives during this time (that is, since the murdering of George Floyd and the protests that have followed and continue to progress).

I felt like I ought to do something to help, but I also felt like whatever I did would be perceived as performative or merely signaling that I am good rather than actually being so.

I mean, as a white guy racial inequality doesn't directly affect me—at least not in a negative way. So how can somebody who only benefits by the inequities of this country actually be sincere? No matter how I tried to convey that I'm a good person, it all seemed vain: it seems you're kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

So I stopped and took a step back. I stopped trying to center myself on social media and whatnot and just pondered. What can I do, given the skills and resources that I have, to make a positive difference? And then it hit me: I can write a song!

So I wrote a song. I wrote a song that is true to the perspective and experience of a trying-to-care white America: "I'm A Good Person T-shirt". It conveys the message of this pitiably earnest white America almost perfectly.

"Hey buddy, don't tell me I'm part of the problem! I'm a good person, and I even bought this t-shirt to prove it!"

As a white artist, the stakes were never that high. So I am trying to acknowledge that by shifting my understanding on what it means to create, while making space for BIPOC voices. Thanks for the song and perspective! I admire you dude!!
