Because beards are no longer a sign of counter-culture like they were in the 60's when Ernie Wilkinson set the policy in place.
This outdated policy is way past time to be updated. Just as moving the LDS church into the 21st century by embracing computers, online websites, and other innovations, let's abolish past irrelevant and offensive "rules" such as prohibiting beards.
Beards rule.
In 1971, then-university President Dallin Oaks defended the bare face rule as "contemporary and pragmatic," saying he would be surprised if the rule was not changed down the road.
This is a great cause. The church, and by extension the Honor Code, is a living, breathing entity. It should be able to be changed to meet current standards and conditions.
BYU needs to support the diversity that President Uchtdorf touted during the April 2013 Priesthood Session.
