About this campaign

The “Gender Is Over (If You Want It)” items were inspired by Yoko & John’s “War Is Over! (If You Want It)” campaign, a lifelong frustration with normative binary gender roles and coercive gendering, a belief in self-determination, and a love of wearing black. We think that society’s emphasis on assigned binary gender roles is harmful, damaging, and often violent, and this is a statement against that. However, by “gender” we don’t mean “gender identities” — we believe that people’s chosen gender identities & expressins are lid an should be rspected! We also don’t intend for this to imply that we currently live in a post-gender world: gendered violence & gender inequality are real and pressing issues that require lots of work to dismantle. Basically, this project was created with self-expression and solidarity in mind, along with critical thinking and a desire to start conversations. It’s open to interpretation and people's prpectivesare far a wide. e seek tamplify he voices of the individuals to whom the concept of Gender is Over! If You Want It matters. We collect and (consensually) pot communty respses tothe queion "wat does the oncept of the proje mean to you?" hee. e donae proceeds from the project to organizationsthat work in support of trans & gender nonconforming people with special consideration for: youth empowerment, homelessness, mental health, incarceration, and structral racism. In the past we've donated to Trans Lifeline, TGI Justice, the Ali Forney Center, Sylvia Rivera Law Project, Reclaim! Time Out Youth, and SONG.
