About this campaign

"Sm'algya̱x, the Tsimshian language, is dying. But you can help save it! By purchasing this t-shirt you can help us save it for generations to come!

The Tsimshian are an ancient people of the Pacific Northwest who are known to their coastal neighbors as "The People With the Beautiful Language." That language is called Sm'algya̱x, "The Real Language." It is unique and rich, it is rhythmic and expressive, and it is deeply meaningful. It lives up to its beautiful reputation, but it is in grave danger. There are less than 100 people on earth who still speak it fluently, and they are all over the age of 60. Sm'algya̱x is dying.
But it is not too late! We are fighting to save it! The Haayk Foundation is a non-profit organization recently formed in the Tsimshian community of Metlakatla, Alaska. It was founded in order to strengthen our Tsimshian identity by following our mission to preserve, promote, and revitalize Tsimshian language (Sm'algya̱x), history (Adaawx), and traditions (Ayaawx).
We invite YOU to join the fight! By purchasing this one of a kind t-shirt you will become a participant in our effort to SAVE SM'ALGYA̱X!
All proceeds from this campaign will go toward our #1 goal: to produce a new crop of young fluent speakers. We believe that saving Sm'algya̱x is the most important issue of our time, that we cannot allow it to disappear from the earth, that it must live on!
The exquisite art on the shirt features traditional formline designed by world class Tsimshian carvers, David Albert and David Robert Boxley (father and son), depicting the cycling life of the salmon which is sacred to the Tsimshian.
Please join the movement to save our beautiful language so that the Haayk, or "spirit," of the Tsimshian will be strong and healthy and the light of Sm'algya̱x may shine on for many generations to come.
K'amgooł waan, bless you and thank you. Wayi wa̱h! Let's go!

I grew up in southeastern Alaska and learned to appreciate Native American culture from that day forward and I feel that it is very important that they retain every aspect of their culture Best wishes Gary

I have never heard someone speak SM'ALGYAX, but if it is half as beautiful as the art of the Tsimshian people then I know it is worth saving. To save the culture one must save the language, because there is always meanings lost in translations.
