Myositis is a term meaning inflammation in the muscles. There are several types of this rare, autoimmune disease. Myositis can cause muscle inflammation and weakness, muscle pain, fatigue, painful rashes, muscle wasting, and difficulty swallowing or breathing. Because of its rarity, the average time for an accurate diagnosis is about 3.5 years. Myositis is also frequently misdiagnosed, with some patients even being told that there is nothing physically wrong and that their "illness" is all in their head. In order to bring attention to the realities of Myositis during Myositis Awareness Month, MSU has this year chosen as their theme "Myositis in Focus".
