About this campaign

Mandy Manocchio-Putney was diagnosed with myeloid leukemia in 2013, doctors told her she’d need a stem cell transplant to survive. In the same breath, however, they told her that locating a suitable donor would be like finding a needle in a haystack. Mandy's case was unique. Though she’s of Korean descent, she was adopted by an Italian-American family as a baby, making her relatives unsuitable matches. And because of her heritage, finding a match on the mostly-Caucasian donor registry wouldn’t be easy, either. Mandy was told she had roughly one year to live without a transplant.

And then along came Magda Kruger, a then-25-year-old from Germany. Against all odds, and despite their different backgrounds, Magda turned out to be a perfect match. Mandy got the news on her birthday, and underwent a successful stem cell transplant shortly thereafter. This story is a true testament to how we can impact others and change lives when we are willing to give something of ourselves to a stranger. On October 4, 2019, Mandy and her family were notified that she was out of remission and would need to once again battle cancer with her unshakable spirit and courageous heart. She resumed treatment on October 22, 2019 at the Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston, MA displaying her positive attitude and wearing her fight face. This campaign is to stand up and beat cancer with Mandy, Bill, Tre and Kai! #fightlikeaputney #lovemandy
