About this campaign
The dog is a natural host for heartworms, which means that heartworms that live inside the dog mature into adults, mate and produce offspring. If untreated, their numbers can increase, and dogs have been known to harbor several hundred worms in their bodies. Heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone. For this reason, heartworm prevention for dogs is by far the best option, and treatment—when needed—should be administered as early in the course of disease as possible.
Heartworm disease is a serious, progressive disease. The earlier it is detected, the better the chances the pet will recover. There are few, if any, early signs of disease when a dog or cat is infected with heartworms, so detecting their presence with a heartworm test administered by a veterinarian is important. The test requires just a small blood sample from your pet, and it works by detecting the presence of heartworm proteins. Some veterinarians process heartworm tests right in their hospitals while others send the samples to a diagnostic laboratory. In either case, results are obtained quickly. If your pet tests positive, further tests may be ordered.

Peppermint Patty was released from a breeding program. She had never lived in a home setting before and had to learn how to play, go potty outside, use stairs, and that food on counters wasn’t there for her. After wonderful work by her foster mom she was recently adopted and is currently going through her heartworm treatment with her new family.
Pumpkin Pie and Pecan Pie came in from a shelter in Kentucky where their time was up. They were moved quickly into foster homes where they are learning what its like to be loved and spoiled. Both tested positive for heartworms. Pecan has an approved home, but Pumpkin is still looking and available. Please spread the word.

(Help for Orphaned Pets through Education)
is a 501(c)3 non-profit, all
volunteer animal care organization, a ‘safehouse’ dedicated to the care and
re-socialization of lost, injured, neglected, and abandoned pets. Through
education and example, we extend the qualities of safety, shelter and
compassion to all animals under our care, in our homes, on the streets and in
the wild. We are funded through tax-deductible donations and fundraising events.
HOPE takes in animals that have been abandoned,
abused or injured, give them the medical attention they require, and re-home
them through adoption. HOPE does not take animals in from the general public,
but rather ones that meet the above criteria, or are on death row at the humane
societies or animal shelters.

I know this will help a little. Best wishes to you and your new family. I also fostered for HOPE SAFEHOUSE, she was adopted by wonderful people. She had her liter, took care of the 6 babies. Went to her furever home and started her treatment.
