About this campaign

Over the last 4+ seasons, the Newton Area Flag Football League has organized over 500 games for more than 1,250 local kids and their families. Our Spring 2020 season was looking to be our largest yet, with over 425 players registered as of early March. Now, however, the COVID-19 crisis threatens our very existence as an organization because we can't hold games this spring, and summer activities are still up in the air. While it looks like Fall 2020 should be a go, it is impossible for us know at this point what that will look like.

What this all means is that we won’t be able to keep serving all our teams, parents, coaches, and staff without community support. We are at a crucial juncture in our development as not only community members but also a small business that has very real costs that can not be recovered. We have been working actively with the City of Newton and other partners to not only survive in the short term but make material improvements in the long term so we can have a dedicated field space that would benefit the greater Newton community at large.

The harsh reality, however, is that because of COVID-19 our organization may not be able to weather this storm and continue to provide high quality experiences for our players and our families. Like most youth sports leagues, NAFFL uses registration payments from families in order to cover upfront costs, both fixed and variable. We purchase jerseys, field space, equipment, t-shirts, medals and trophies, insurance, LLC fees, website hosting, technology, marketing, officiating, training, taxes, and much more. A significant amount of tuition payments we have received have already been spent in advance of the Spring 2020 season, and we do not have large cash reserves mostly because we are a very lean operation with narrow margins.

To help us through this difficult period and hopefully have NAFFL around to host future seasons and tournaments, we hope you will consider buying some great swag and keeping us financially viable while we are cash flow negative. In addition to some awesome gear with our brand new logo, we will also post all of our donors' names and/or businesses to our website to recognize your contributions. We have partnered successfully with numerous Newton-area businesses in the past and are happy to do so moving forward.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us by email or phone. Thank you for your support and, as always, #letsgoflag(whensafe)!!

Unlike the players and coaches celebrating a big play in the above image, it is with great sadness that we must report that the City of Newton and Daly Field will not be opening up their facilities this spring (or possibly summer) due to the COVID-19 crisis. As a result, the Newton Area Flag Football League will not be able to operate for our Spring 2020 season. We are disappointed, but we agree with the decisions that have been made at the state and local levels.

As many of you know, our league is an official NFL Flag program that is truly a small family business operated with a small but dedicated group of partners, most notably myself, my wife Megan, and our head of officiating Steve Pollard, each of whom are passionate about providing quality programs for children in our community. We believe that NAFFL is a one of a kind experience that is vital to the growth and development of the youth and we do everything we can to provide a memorable experience.

Since we began, we have donated to school fundraisers, provided scholarships to families in need without requesting tax returns, and have donated and supported many other programs in the Newton area. Our league provides jobs to many community partners, including our referees, and two of our key staff members - Ian and Abe - are college students that have taken on tremendous responsibility in many different areas of the business.

In short, we have tried continuously with countless hours of blood, sweat and tears to build something meaningful and worthwhile, and that makes our community a better place, not just on the field but also off.

We sincerely hope that we will be back for the Fall 2020 season and beyond, and in the meantime we are still exploring options for both summer and winter programs. After 4+ seasons, we are proud of the reputation we have built and are thankful to all the families who have been with us along the way, especially those that have joined for every season and event from the very beginning. This is an extremely difficult time for us, and while we are doing all we can to provide support for our community members in the form of free masks and our podcast series, we are asking for your help if you are able.

We know that this isn't easy on any of us, but we have to stay optimistic that we can learn from this experience and come back stronger...we miss seeing everyone on Sundays and hope that everyone is safe and well. Hang in there and before you know it, we'll all have lots to celebrate, like we used to :)
