About this campaign

The ISC/IFC and other student leaders from various organizations (including HC, SGA, OG, STIX, the Wick, Interfaith, the OCCU and more!) have teamed up to launch the #standupsewanee movement, an inclusive community service campaign that focuses on meeting the needs of our larger community through service and philanthropy. This fundraiser is designed to accomplish 3 things: (1) empower the McClurg workers who give so much to serve us; (2) call for higher wages for our everyday heroes; and (3) RAISE MONEY (!) to donate directly to Chef Rick's contingency fund, which covers emergency expenses when workers find themselves homeless, need to pay medical debt, funeral expenses, etc. It's time to give back to those who give so much to us. It's time to stand up, Sewanee!

We recognize that one fundraiser won't resolve the issue of insecurities. We would also like to remind everyone that these people are no charity case. In so many ways, they are our heroes. Barbara Myers, the lovely woman who makes our cookies, testified as a young widow in front of Ted Kennedy and the Senate Judiciary Committee to advocate for more equitable mine safety laws. We want to raise awareness and empower our workers, like Barbara, who deserve to not worry, to know the people they serve care for them and thank them for their service. We recognize that it is the least we can do, and that it is so important that we do it. It's time to stand up, Sewanee!

As a student at Sewanee in the 1980s, I was culpably unaware of the conditions for our dining hall staff and other essential workers. I'm proud of our current students for taking notice and standing up. EQB.

Great initiative! Thanks for leading—

I support this campaign because Sewanee is a place of abundant privilege and resources, material and intellectual. We have the wherewithal to make the lives of all of the mountain community stronger. I hope that the University will increase wages.

As an athlete as Sewanee, and someone with little disposable income during school, having access to the incredible food and kind staff was a big deal to me. I've still never found a better scone or croissant breakfast sandwich!

Jordan Macha, C’08 $26

We should all stand together in support of justice. As an alumna, it is a long time coming for the University to correct course and pay a true living wage to those who work within Sewanee’s gates.
