Help Turtles Like Canal!

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center protects and conserves sea turtles through the rescue, care, and release of sick and injured sea turtles; through public education regarding the plight of sea turtles and the threat of their extinction; and through learning opportunities for students of biology, wildlife conservation, and veterinary medicine from around the world. We treat up to 130 sick and injured sea turtles every year. Many have buoyancy issues at some point during their rehabilitation.


Positive buoyancy disorder, sometimes called “Bubble Butt Syndrome,” occurs in sea turtles when injury or disease prevents full exhalation of air from the lungs, or when gas accumulates in areas outside the lungs, or when gas accumulates in the GI tract. There are many causes for buoyancy disorders. In Canal's case, this condition likely stemmed from the initial boat strike injury which caused him to strand.
