School Supplies for Nema, Chuuk, Micronesia

My husband is from Nema, Chuuk, Micronesia. It is a very small island which only has 1 school that accommodates K - 8th grade students. Currently the total enrollment there is between 150-175 students. Once they graduate from the 8th grade, they transfer to the main island, Chuuk, to attend high school. My husband has shared with me many times about how poor their school system is. Most students only get 1 or 2 #2 pencils for the entire year and one notebook, if they are lucky. Each teacher is given 1 text book to teach out of that is very outdated, typically from the 1970s - 1980s and the book is passed around for the students to look at. Teachers still use chalkboards, or makeshift chalkboards made from plywood and painted with black paint. School supplies are very difficult to come by there, so they rely on getting them from outside sources. The main island of Chuuk receives help from organizations in the United States in getting school supplies, but the outer islands, such as Nema, do not.

The most needed school supplies are as follows:
#2 pencils
Spiral notebooks

So far, my husband and I have purchased enough notebooks for each student to have 1 each, and enough #2 pencils for each student to receive 2 each. However, we would love to send more so there are more to go around if a student loses or breaks their supplies. We have not purchased any chalk. We would love to purchase dry erase boards and dry erase markers or at least REAL chalk boards and erasers.

There is also a local school district who has agreed to donate some text books to our cause that they were going to discard. They are not the most updated, but compared to what they currently use, these would be a tremendous blessing to them.

The notebooks we have purchased as well as the pencils will cost $125 and some change just to ship. That does not include the shipping costs of the textbooks. Once we receive the text books we will find out from the post office how much they will cost to send.
