The Philadelphia Fire Department was founded on March 15, 1871. The late 19th century saw tremendous growth of both population and industry in the city and this, in turn, saw an increase demand for firefighting services that the fractured system of volunteer fire companies could no longer keep pace with. Since that time the Philadelphia Fire Department has become a preeminent provider of fire suppression, prevention, rescue, Haz-Mat and Emergency Medial Services.
