About this campaign
Who Are We?
We are fifth graders from the East Village Community School who are fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and trying to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ people being treated unfairly because of their sexuality or how they identify.
What's The Problem?
One problem is that LGBTQ+ people are not being treated fairly, for example sometimes LGBTQ+ people don't get jobs, have to wait on longer lines, get separated from others or other things that are unfair.
Another problem is that LGBTQ+ people are getting stopped, harmed or threatened for no apparent reason. It is not fair that people are getting stopped because of their own opinions or because of their sexuality, or their own opinion. For example sometimes a LGBTQ+ people will be stopped on the street while they are minding their own business for someone to tell them “that's not ok” or “I don't support” etc. Sometimes they will get threatened or harmed or hurt for their own opinion which is not fair.
Why Do We Care?
You may be asking, “Why do we care?” Or better yet, you might be thinking, “Why should I care?” Well, imagine it like this. People who are LGBTQ+ are just people. Some love people who identify with their own gender, and some love other genders. Some people aren’t attracted to any gender, while others feel like somebody that other people may disagree with. Are we really making things hard for people who love each other? For people deciding who and what they want to be? Surprisingly, we are, and it needs to stop. To answer your question, we care and you should care too, because people are people, and even though they have their differences, we are all the same. We are all human.
What Can You Do To Help?
You may be thinking what is the point of telling you all this if you can’t really do anything, well guess what you can! The first thing you can do to help is, you can help raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ society and their problems. Next you can have people sign our petition. Plus, just by buying this shirt, you are helping! Merchandise is a way to tell other people that there is a problem and that you care about that problem just by them looking at you.
