Katie’s Story
First Lieutenant Katie Ann Blanchard was destined to become an Army Nurse. Her mother was an Army Nurse. Her father served in the Army. She met and fell in love with an Army officer. Service was in her blood.
As a Nurse at Leavenworth, one of her employees frequently lashed out at Katie with aggressive behavior, which escalated to the point where Katie didn’t feel safe speaking to him alone. She wrote him up multiples times and asked for help from her supervisors, who did not intervene. A week after she told her supervisors that she believed her subordinate was unstable and dangerous, he showed up at her office with a water bottle full of gasoline, and doused Katie in it. He then lit a match and set her on fire.
Katie severely burned and nearly lost her life. Countless surgeries, therapies and treatments over the past year have taken a tremendous toll on her and her family. Her attacker was convicted of Attempted Murder and will be sentenced on November 2. Katie and her family will have to face him one last time and read their victim impact statements, reliving their nightmare.
