About this campaign
"To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world's greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived."
Whovian Running Club is pleased to present the first event of the 2020 season:
Vincent 10k!
This year, our events are a celebration of those Doctor Who moments that drew us in not just as casual viewers, but as devoted fans. For some, that was a certain Doctor's personality, or an adventure that captured our attention. For others, it was an interaction, a chance meeting that spoke to us on a very personal level. In the four years we've had this Whovian community, we cannot count the number of times we've been told that meeting Vincent Van Gogh was their 'moment'. Few stories possess so much heart, compassion, and incredible beauty...all within one fragile frame.
Your registration includes this stunning 3" medal featuring Vincent's lasting gift to Amy Pond, the 'sunflower' who came into his life and left him forever changed! As with every WRC medal, there's also the beautiful custom sublimated ribbon and the always-popular personalized digital bib!
"My experience is that there is, you know, surprisingly, always hope."
Despite the Doctor and Amy's interaction in his life, the world lost Vincent Van Gogh in July of 1890. His struggles with depression, alcoholism, and mental illness were largely ignored, and his incredible fame and influence upon Western art came entirely after his passing. There is a lie we tend to believe which is that we can't talk about issues such as depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. We've learned that two out of three people who struggle with depression never get help for it.
Our charity partner for this event began as an attempt to help one person see the next day, and the day after that. Jamie Tworkowski sold shirts from a box to help a struggling friend pay for the cost of a treatment center. He posted his experiences online as a story shortly thereafter...and the title of the story was "To Write Love On Her Arms".
TWLOHA's story spread in a wave of person-to-person connections, of visibility and acknowledgement, of love and of hope. Their goal is for people to get the help they need and deserve, by connecting people to local mental health resources, and providing scholarships so they can receive counseling and professional help. Their dream is to live in a world where people everywhere talk openly and honestly about mental health. Where it's okay to ask for help.
Our support of TWLOHA will fund counseling sessions to support people struggling with self-harm and suicidal ideation and give them the tools to keep going. To make certain that everyone knows that YOU MAKE TODAY BETTER.
"If we had got married, our kids would have had very, very red hair...the ultimate 'ginge'. Brighter than sunflowers."
Over the course of one harrowing adventure, Amy and Vincent because fast friends. While she wasn't 'the marrying type' at the time, Vincent did leave her with one special gift. Give yourself a gift of beauty with the Vincent 10k commemorative event shirt!
Available in multiple fabrics and styles from tees, to tanks, to hoodies, proceeds will go also support TWLOHA!
"You've turned out to be the first doctor ever actually to make a difference to my life."
Remember that this is a 'virtual' active event, so you can complete your ten kilometer distance however, wherever and whenever you want! How? You can walk, run, skip, dance, or saunter. Where? You can do it around your neighborhood, at the gym, on the treadmill, or on your favorite trail. When? You can do it on a Monday night, a Thursday morning, or a Sunday afternoon. It's all up to you!
For some extra fun, the optional 'run day' for the event is February 14, Valentine's Day: because self-care is as important as anything you can do for others. (Love is love is love is love!) If you want to join thousands of others around the world completing some or all of the distance on that day, you'll be in some wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey company!
Registration closes at midnight on Sunday, February 16.
Let's head out into that starry night and go for a run!
