Capturing the History of Winslow JHS~Built in 1928
fullsizeoutput_47ffjpeg

Help us prepare to celebrate the memories, history, and experiences our school has given to our community for over 90 years!

Our Project WJHS was built in 1928, originally serving as our town’s high school until 1965, when a new high school was built and the facility became our town’s junior high. An addition was constructed in 1971, allowing for a larger library, cafeteria, industrial arts/arts wing and office, and classroom space. It has been a town treasure for years, for it is not just a school: it is a well-used community space. Since the determination was made to close the school, there is a need to get an extensive and elaborate history of the school documented for posterity.
The time table has created a wonderful opportunity to fulfill this request from the townspeople and former students and staff. As the eighth-grade history teacher in this school, it has also created a wonderful opportunity to have our current students involved in a community service-learning project as well.

The overall goal of this project is to capture video and audio the wide amount of education, history, and memories this building has provided for our town. Having an archive of primary sources and personal accounts of what this building has meant to people of our town will be a great service for our community. Another goal of our endeavor is to also create a virtual museum within our publication as well as on a TV screen within the new building, as the building has some amazing architectural work, plus student artwork all throughout the building on ceiling tiles. The plan would “make the walls talk” and get that history down. The final product will capture all the wonderful stories and historical relics, figures, and images that have passed through that school down for posterity.

The funds from this fundraiser will be used to provide a final celebration for the town to bid farewell to our beloved school and enable us to print and publish books of our project for posterity. Thank you!
