"My stepdad was diagnosed with lung cancer in September and died in December, just a few months later. He was young - 49 years old. The last days of his life were trying - working hard just to take a breath. His passing inspired me to use the life and body that I have to it's capacity. So I registered and trained for the Minneapolis "Get Lucky 7K" in March - right around St. Patrick's Day. Hugh, my stepdad, was Irish through and through - so running this race in his honor was very special to me. On the back of the shirt, I had, "Every breath," printed. That was my running mantra - something that I repeated to myself when I felt winded on my training runs. Wearing this shirt that day reminded me of why I was running and to keep it up -even when it was getting tough. What I was doing was a choice that I had and Hugh's illness was not a choice. Working with CustomInk was so easy - the online design program made the process simple and inspiring. I wore the shirt with pride that day and still wear it when I need an emotional boost. "This photograph was taken five minutes before the first wave of runners left the starting point for the Maple Grove Run/Walk for Darfur on May 30, 2009, a 3.7K track around Rice Lake behind Maple Grove Evangelical Church. Because of the support of over 250 individuals and companies, we were able to raise over $8,200 to be given to the American Refugee Committee in Minneapolis, Minnesota. "My husband's sister, Jessica, has been sick for over 2 years with a deep bacterial virus which has taken over her immune system, leaving her extremely ill. Her journey through recovering has been ugly. In and out of hospitals and clinics (including the Mayo) she has now been going through intense therapy thousands of miles away from home (Minneapolis) in Tuscon, AZ. Our prayers are being answered and with baby steps she is getting better. Our pic was taken at a fund raiser for our family (medical expenses are not covered) to cover the cost of therepy at this holistic clinic."
