Choosing the Right Hoodie Weight & Fabric

Not every hoodie is built for the same job — weight and fabric affect warmth, drape, and how the finished print or embroidery looks.

Lightweight & Performance: Ideal for athletic teams, layering, or warmer climates. Nike Therma-FIT and similar performance fleece styles wick moisture while still taking a clean print.
Midweight: The most versatile everyday option — substantial enough for cool weather, breathable enough for year-round wear. Our best-selling styles (Gildan Midweight 50/50, Hanes EcoSmart) fall here.
Heavyweight: Built for warmth and durability — reverse-weave and heavyweight fleece styles (Champion Reverse Weave, Carhartt Rain Defender) hold up to years of wear and give large logos a premium, substantial finish.
Cotton Blends & Specialty Fabrics: 50/50 cotton-poly blends resist shrinking and dry fast. Ring-spun and tri-blend fabrics (Bella+Canvas, Comfort Colors) offer a softer hand-feel. Organic cotton and eco-conscious options (Stanley/Stella, Gildan Softstyle Eco) are available for sustainability-minded orders.

Not sure which weight fits your event? Our team can help you match fabric to season and use case.

Pullover, Full-Zip, or Quarter-Zip? How to Choose the Right Custom Hoodie

Pullover: The classic hoodie silhouette — typically the most affordable option and available in the widest range of colors and brands.
Full-Zip: Easier to layer on and off, popular for events, corporate gifts, and athletic teams who need to take it on and off between activities.
Quarter-Zip: A hybrid option — pullover warmth with a zip at the collar for easy on/off and adjustable airflow. A strong pick for outdoor or performance-oriented groups.

Beyond the standard cut, we also carry youth sizes, tall sizes for a longer fit, and women's cropped and drop-shoulder styles — so the whole group can match without anyone forcing a fit that doesn't work for them.

How to Choose and Design The Best Custom Hoodie for Your Group

Here's some advice for what type of custom hoodie to design and order for your group:

Sports Teams: Durable enough for practice, sharp enough for travel days. Add player names and numbers through Design Lab for a roster your whole team will actually wear off the field.
School Clubs & Spirit Wear: From student council to marching band, custom hoodies are a wardrobe staple for school groups — mix youth and adult sizes in one order to fit the whole roster.
Company Events & Retreats: Heavier weights and premium brands (Carhartt, Nike, Under Armour) make strong corporate gifts and retreat swag that holds up long after the offsite ends.
Greek Life & Campus Organizations: Full-color designs, embroidered crests, and a wide brand range make it easy to match chapter colors and traditions exactly.
Family Reunions & Milestone Events: Order a shared design with a family name or event year — no minimum on most screen-print styles means even a small family gathering can get matching gear.
Fundraisers: Hoodies sell well as fundraising merch — sturdy enough to justify a higher price point, wearable enough that people actually buy them again next year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the custom hoodie maker to design my hoodie?

Our online hoodie designer makes it easy. Just pick your style and color, upload your logo or artwork, and place it where you want. You can add text, choose from thousands of free graphics, and preview your personalized hoodie before ordering. No design skills required.

Why should I order custom hoodies from Custom Ink?

This is why Custom Ink is the best place to order custom hoodies from.

Real people, 7 days a week: Available by phone or chat every day of the week — and they know custom apparel inside and out.

Is there a minimum order for custom hoodies?

Many of our hoodie styles have no minimum order quantity, so you can order as few as one. For larger groups, bulk pricing kicks in automatically where the more you order, the lower your price per hoodie.

What's the difference between screen printing and embroidery on hoodies?

Screen printing is ideal for bold, colorful designs and large graphics because it creates a smooth, vibrant finish. Embroidery stitches your design directly into the fabric for a textured, professional look that's perfect for logos and company apparel. Both methods hold up wash after wash.

Should I choose a pullover or zip-up hoodie?

Pullover hoodies offer a classic look and are typically more affordable. Zip-up hoodies are easier to layer and take on and off, making them popular for events, corporate gifts, and athletic teams. We offer both in a range of weights, colors, and brands.

How long does it take to get my custom hoodie order?

Most orders arrive in about two weeks with free standard shipping. If you're on a deadline, we offer rush and super-rush delivery to get your personalized hoodies to you in as little as 7 days.

What brands do you carry for custom hoodies?

We offer hoodies from top brands including Champion, Gildan, Hanes, Nike, Bella + Canvas, Independent Trading Co., and Carhartt. Styles range from lightweight performance hoodies to heavyweight fleece, in sizes from youth to 5XL.

Can I print on both the front and back of my hoodies?

Yes. With many hoodie options, you have several areas of design available.

What's the difference between lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight hoodies?

Weight affects warmth and durability. Lightweight and performance styles suit layering and warmer weather. Midweight is the most versatile, year-round option and where most of our best sellers live. Heavyweight styles (like reverse-weave and Rain Defender fleece) are built for cold weather and long-term durability. Heavier fabric can also carry larger prints and embroidery with a more premium look.

What hoodie brands does Custom Ink carry?

We carry more than 20 brands, including Champion, Gildan, Hanes, Nike, Bella+Canvas, Carhartt, Adidas, Under Armour, Port & Company, Independent Trading Co., Comfort Colors, Jerzees, Stanley/Stella, New Era, Bayside, American Apparel, and more — in weights from lightweight performance fleece to heavyweight cotton, and sizes from youth to 5XL.

Do you carry youth sizes, tall sizes, or fits for women?

Yes. Beyond standard adult sizing (up to 5XL on many styles), we carry youth hoodies for school and team orders, tall sizes for a longer body and sleeve fit, and women's-specific styles including cropped and drop-shoulder cuts. Mix sizes and fits within a single order so everyone in your group gets a hoodie that actually fits.

Where can I put my design on a hoodie?

Most hoodie styles support multiple decoration areas — front chest, full front, back, and sleeve, depending on the style. Some styles support up to 8 ink colors in a single location. Upload your artwork in Design Lab to see exactly which placement areas are available for the specific style and color you've chosen.
