"My mother was diagnosed with lupus when I was 8 years old. Until now, I haven't been strong enough to share my story. Having a parent with a chronic illness that creeps up without warning and threatens to take their life is terrifying. My childhood was colored by fear and uncertainty, as I worried that the only person I really had in my life could be ripped away from me at any time. Every time the phone rang, I feared it was another store employee telling me they had to call 911.
My mom's a fighter. She is the strongest person I know. I'm so excited that I am finally able to share in that strength, to tell our story to our friends and family, and to join the fight against lupus. This year, I joined the Alliance for Lupus Research’s (ALR) Walk with Us to Cure Lupus in San Francisco on October 11, 2014 with my husband and my good friend and her family. ALR's Walk is a national fundraising program that changes lives and brings people together in the common goal to find a cure for lupus.
Lupus is a devastating autoimmune disease that affects an estimated 1.5 million Americans. It is more common than leukemia, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis. The exact cause of lupus is unknown and there is no known cure.
