The tragedy at the Navy Yard hit a little too close to home for my family and I. My wife, a NAVSEA contractor, was at work on the third floor of building 197 when the shooting started. My mother-in-law's office, down the hall from where my wife sits, was used as a shelter by employees resourceful enough to barricade themselves inside. Luckily my mother-in-law was out on vacation, but those employees who were there stayed for hours hiding behind the desk and listening to the shooter walk back and forth on the 3rd floor, firing his shotgun.

My wife was fortunate enough to be seated near an emergency exit.  After the 2nd or 3rd rounds of shots she heard, her and other members of her group finally realized the severity of the situation.  They were able to sprint down a staircase and escaped to safety. I was able re-unite with my wife fairly quickly once I made my way down to the Yard.  By then, she and her co-workers were moved to an off-site building and I was able to take her home.

I can't tell you how fortunate I feel that my mother-in-law was on vacation and that I was able to re-unite with my wife and take her home. Words cannot express my sadness and compassion for those families who couldn't do the same.

I am running the Athens Marathon, 26.2 total miles, on November 10th (my first ever) and I thought that this would be a great opportunity to raise funds to help the victims of the Navy Yard tragedy (20 in total). Please visit my crowdrise page to add comments, follow my training and to make additional donations.

Thank you so much for your contribution to the victims.
