About this campaign
Help Achieve Greater VBAC Access for Homebirthing Families in Maryland!
The Association of Independent Midwives of Maryland is currently fundraising to pay for the yearlong task of employing a lobbyist who can effectively bring our vision of midwifery to the Maryland legislature. Currently, Certified Professional Midwives licensed in Maryland are not allowed to care for mothers who have had a prior cesarean birth. Research shows that a person's chance for achieving a safe VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) is up to 87% in the home setting, while the chance for a similar safe outcome is only about 15% in Maryland hospitals.

Many hospitals in Maryland do not offer the option of a VBAC, either requiring a scheduled repeat cesarean or erecting such barriers to a physiological birth that VBAC becomes difficult or impossible to achieve. As a result, birthing at home, with or without a trained midwife, is the only option available for those who want a greater chance at reducing the overall risk of morbidity/mortality in their current pregnancy and birth AND their future pregnancies.
Supporters
Every family should have the option, covered by insurance, for a midwife assisted birth.
We need to expand the scope of Certified Professional Midwives so Maryland Families seeking VBAC have more options.
Midwives are talented, trained professionals doing amazing work. Having a previous cesarean should not prevent someone from having a midwife assisted home birth.
Families deserve access to all birth options.
Where do I begin? I could go on and on about my own experiences. At the end of the day, midwives have supported pregnant women for centuries. They listen to women; they care about women. And they're beyond qualified.
