16 yr old Simon Jones found out that he will not be allowed to run Cross Country or participate in Mountain Bike racing this season. The 2 things that motivate him are now the two things that are far from his reach. Due to his maintenance chemotherapy his body has to work harder now to stay hydrated, and to keep his weight up. Every 3 weeks we must put more poison into his young body to kill the cancer that insists on taking over. It is working though! The last CT scan and PET scans continued to show less activity and no new tumors. We don't know if we stop chemo if the tumors will continue to die or if new ones will cease to grow. We do know that he was on this same maintenance chemotherapy 2 years ago then stopped because the cancer was gone but after 6 months the tumors returned. So what do we do? This active young man, who has always loved to compete in sports can no longer participate. He is heartbroken. This is what cancer does. It takes away the ability to choose your own path. My son would love to go run 5 miles every day or or ride his mountain bike through the woods on trails that most sane people would stay away from, but he cannot. He has to spend beautiful afternoons hooked up to an IV full of chemicals so he can live. So we are honoring Simon by walking, running or biking this September. You are invited to join us.
