About this campaign

This fundraiser was started in May 1985 by Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt who walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer. Friends, family, and patients watched and supported him as he walked and ran more than 83.6 miles and raised $27,000 through pledges to help save lives from cancer.

My daughter Amelia DePino was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) at the age of 18 years old during the last half of her high school senior year. It was a tremendous blow to a bright, smart, articulate, inspirational young woman who wanted to become a pediatric nurse. Once her treatment at Yale was complete, she was on the road to being well and the leukemia returned during her first year of college at Sacred Heart University. Boston Childrens Hospital was where we chose for her bone marrow transplant. The procedure went smoothly, with her discharge the day before Thanksgiving; sooner than expected. Then by the first of the year, the leukemia resurrected again. This time we were going to go for the CAR T therapy which was still fairly new. Amelia's body could not hold on for her cell transplant and she passed away on April 15, 2019.
Our family and friends participate in this walk each year in memory of Amelia. Amelia's absolute favorite princess was Ariel, The Little Mermaid. If Amelia had lived, she would be the first person in line to help others suffering. We walk for her. Please join and support our team and show Amelia that we need all of these "Mermaids" to represent the strength of just her.
