Global Bersih 5 San Francisco T-shirt

This past year saw the unveiling of the massive 1MDB scandal in the Wall Street Journal, and extensive reports as to how more than US$3.5 billion (approx. RM 14b) of Malaysian taxpayers' funds have been misappropriated through corrupt means by high level officials, led by Prime Minister Najib Razak and his cronies.

And most recently, the US Department of Justice has filed a case to seize about US$1 billion (approx. RM 4b) in assets associated with 1MDB's international money-laundering scandal, under the United State's Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative. (This is the largest ever amount sought by the DOJ under this initiative!) And there are reportedly probes in at least 10 other countries relating to this massive corruption.

In spite of such a huge international scandal which has stolen billions of dollars of Malaysian people's monies and received worldwide condemnation, the Prime Minister has vehemently refused to step down. He has instead consolidated power by removing top officials from various government institutions, including the Deputy Prime Minister, thereby further compromising Malaysia's government institutions.

The Bersih 5 mass rally (B5) has been called to give a loud voice to the majority of Malaysians who condemn this desperate lack of institutional reforms and action against those involved in the 1MDB scandal. B5 will take place in Kuala Lumpur on November 19, 2016 (Saturday). The Global Bersih movement will also organize solidarity rallies in almost 100 cities around the world, to join in this condemnation of massive corruption in Malaysia and call for justice and reform immediately.

In solidarity with B5, Global Bersih San Francisco Bay Area (GB SF) will organize a community rally on November 19 where hundreds of Malaysians and other supporters in the Bay Area are expected to show their support for this call for democracy and reform in Malaysia. And in conjunction with that, GB SF is issuing this special commemorative t-shirt to show our support.
