Katie was originally diagnosed when she was 17, with Ewing’s Sarcoma, during Christmas of 2018. Ewing’s Sarcoma is a rare pediatric bone cancer. She went through one year of treatment, which included lots of chemotherapy, several surgeries, numerous infections, many blood transfusions, battling sepsis, and countless side effects. After battling for one year, she was finally cancer free at the end of 2019.
After being one year cancer free and finishing one year of college, Katie’s cancer relapsed. This was Christmas of 2020, when she was 19 years old. This time, the cancer had spread to her lungs, pelvis, and diaphragm. Katie received more chemotherapy, surgeries, blood transfusions, terrible side effects, and radiation. She is now 22 years old and continuing treatment with no end date in sight. It’s been an extremely difficult 4+ years, and we wish we knew what the future holds.
To date, Katie has received:
105 doses of radiation, 38 cycles of chemo (300+ doses), 54 units of blood, 15 surgeries, and spent countless days in the hospital in Reno and in Stanford.
Katie has also found joy in creating artwork to raise awareness for childhood cancer. You can check out her artwork at: www.katiescollective.com or @katies_collective on Instagram.
She is now starting the process of receiving an autologous stem cell transplant at Lucile Packard Stanford Children’s Hospital this September. She will be inpatient for about one month and we are hoping there will be minimal side effects (short and long-term). We are ultimately hoping for a cure! Despite all of Katie’s setbacks, she continues to remain positive and face the next steps of her battle. Sarcoma is an extremely underfunded cancer and we need more treatment options! Thank you for all of your love, support, and prayers. Keep them coming!
