About this campaign
Ume (pronounced oo-may) is only the second tapir birth in the 120-year history of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Named by her dedicated keeper staff, Ume means plum blossom and apricot in Japanese. Malayan tapirs are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with populations declining due to habitat loss caused by deforestation and human development. Parents Yuna and Baku were paired as part of the Species Survival Plan, a program that helps ensure the genetic diversity and long-term sustainability of Malayan tapirs in human care.
Purchase these shirts proudly, knowing that 100% of the proceeds will support animal care at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

Ume is the cutest, I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t buy one of these
We love little Ume! We’ve been keeping up with her since she was born, and hope to see her in person one day.
I love Tapirs!
I love Point Defiance Zoo's efforts to raise awareness about how climate change affects the animals around us.
