About this campaign
Ume (pronounced oo-may) is only the second tapir birth in the 120-year history of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Named by her dedicated keeper staff, Ume means plum blossom and apricot in Japanese. Malayan tapirs are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with populations declining due to habitat loss caused by deforestation and human development. Parents Yuna and Baku were paired as part of the Species Survival Plan, a program that helps ensure the genetic diversity and long-term sustainability of Malayan tapirs in human care.
Purchase these "Celebrating Ume" tops proudly, knowing that 100% of the proceeds will support animal care at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

My grandsons LOVE Tapirs!!!
For the animals
Ume. Fear of the loss of so many animals.
Who can resist!
Ume has been a wonderful source of serotonin for our household.
I’ve loved tapirs since I was little. They were always my favorite animal to see at the zoo. I can’t wait to visit Point Defiance later this May, and hopefully get a look at Ume and her mother in person
Ume deserves the world!!
