About this campaign

Hello, My name is Makenzie Lawrey, Gavin’s older sister. I am fundraising for my younger brother Gavin's next Service Dog. His current Seizure Alert Dog Hershey is 13 and nearing retirement. Don't worry- Hershey will remain a member of our family.

When I was in kindergarten, my mom took us to see Santa and my only Christmas Wish was for my brother to get a service dog to keep him safe. Santa told my mom and her friend and we came up with a plan. At the age of 5-years-old, I raised $15,000 to get Gavin his first Service dog, Hershey. He has been taking care of Gavin for 10 years as his seizure alert dog and very best friend. After 10 years of dedication and hard work, it's time to plan for Hershey's retirement.

I am 17-yrs-old now and started another Christmas Wish Mission in December 2020 and need YOUR help to finish STRONG for the strongest person I know- my brother! My wish is to be able to bless my incredibly brave, funny and sassy 14-year-old brother, Gavin with his next service dog.

Gavin has a Mitochondrial (Mito) Disease. It affects every cell in your body accept the red blood cells and unfortunately there is no cure for this disease. Mito creates many challenges for Gavin and makes everyday tasks more difficult. He doesn't let that stop him though! With his new Service Dog, he will be unstoppable on a "good day"! Helping my brother have the best quality of life possible is so important to our family. Having a service dog for Gavin puts my family and me at ease knowing he has a furry caretaker.

Gavin's incredible NEW Service dog is currently in training. His name is Kayson, he is a Standard Apricot Poodle, born April 9th, 2021. Kayson will alert Gavin and a nearby adult before Gavin has a seizure to get him to a safe place, work as his "Walk Assist" dog to allow Gavin more independence when he isn't in his wheelchair. He isn't a fan of his "cane". Kayson will also provide a variety of tasks like deep pressure therapy to help with Gavin's back spasms, retrieving Gavin's medicine bag, snacks and water bottles if Gavin is feeling shaky, tired or weak to tackle the stairs/walking that moment/day. On top of that he will provide a variety of tasks like giving hugs when Gavin is anxious, has had a tough day, be his partner in crime to tackle the world and as Gavin says "help attract all the ladies".

Kayson comes from a 20+ year bloodline of Medical Alert Dogs and is currently being trained by the same trainer who trained Hershey and is doing amazing in his training process.

Please help my Christmas Wish- Take 2.... COME TRUE!! No donation is too small. Every dollar counts and is appreciated to help me reach my goal to raise enough money to cover the variety hefty expenses of getting a fully trained Service Dog of this magnitude.
