About this campaign

In the Summer of 2015, three music students from the University of Tennessee will be travelling to Moshi, Tanzania to start a string program.

Children in the country of Tanzania are faced with many challenges while living in a terrible economic and social environment. Approximately 0.27% of students will choose to attend college and 30% of young adults are illiterate. Through the power of musical education, a group of students from the University of Tennessee's School of Music hope to empower these Tanzanian children so that they may achieve higher levels of education and defy the odds against them…

Our team is composed of students from various disciplines within UT's music school including performance, musicology, and education. Despite the different backgrounds, the students are united in their interest in music pedagogy, outreach and education. During the months of June and July we will teach violin, viola and cello classes to students at the Korongoni Secondary School in Tanzania. At the end of their lessons we will host a final performance for their families, teachers and fellow students. On the surface we are teaching these students how to play string instruments, but in reality we are empowering them to continue their education and become citizens of the global community.

Although the benefits for the summer Tanzania trip are great for both our team and for the Tanzanian students we are impacting, the total cost exceeds our budget. Your contributions will go directly towards travel expenses such as airfare, instrument travel and lodging for the students and professor.

I think it is a wonderful idea to share the gift of music with children who otherwise would never have this experience.
