The Gustavus Adolphus College community was deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected passing
of Professor Ian Hill on December 28, 2024.
Professor Hill joined the Gustavus faculty ten years ago, bringing with him a wealth of experience and
a genuine passion for teaching. A native of Savage, Minnesota, he embarked on his academic journey
at Carleton College, where he developed a strong foundation in chemistry. This passion led him to
pursue further studies at the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science,
delving deeper into the intricacies of this fascinating field. His academic pursuits extended beyond
Minnesota, as he embarked on postdoctoral research at the University of Virginia, broadening his
horizons and expanding his knowledge.
Returning to his home state, Professor Hill found his true calling at Gustavus Adolphus College. For a
decade, he dedicated himself to inspiring and guiding students, leaving a mark on countless lives. His
impact extended beyond the classroom, as he became a beloved figure among students and
colleagues alike.
Professor Hill was renowned for his exceptional teaching abilities, particularly in introductory
chemistry and quantitative analysis courses. He possessed a unique ability to make complex concepts
accessible and engaging, fostering a love of learning in his students. Professor Hill's contributions to
the Gustavus community extended beyond the classroom.
Professor Hill was admired for his gentle spirit, his unwavering kindness, and his infectious
enthusiasm for teaching. Students often sought his guidance, not only for academic matters but also
for personal support. He possessed a remarkable ability to connect with students on a personal level,
offering encouragement and creating a supportive learning environment. His gentle demeanor and
genuine care for his students created a lasting impact on their academic journeys and personal
growth.
Beyond his academic and culinary pursuits, Professor Hill possessed a remarkable wit, a kind and
humble spirit, and a genuine love for life. He was a gifted listener and a cherished friend, always
ready to lend an ear and offer support. With a passion for patisserie, especially donuts, and a talent
for sourdough bread making, sharing his creations with colleagues and students became a cherished
tradition, further solidifying his place in the hearts of the Gustavus community. His "dad jokes" were
legendary, bringing laughter and joy to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew
him.
Professor Hill leaves behind his loving wife and twin 3.5-year-old daughters, family, and friends. He
was preceded in death by his daughters Faye (passed in 2016) and Selene (passed in 2017).
The loss of Professor Hill leaves a profound void
within the Gustavus community. His dedication to
teaching, his genuine care for his students, and his
warm and welcoming personality will be deeply
missed. The Gustavus Adolphus College community
extends its deepest sympathies to his family and
friends during this difficult time.

Ian was a wonderful friend and colleague, broadly knowledgeable and intensely curious. We spent countless hours discussing many topics in addition to Gustavus-related items. I will miss Ian immensely.
Our time with you was way too short, Ian. You were so excellent at building relationships. We appreciated and valued you more than was ever said and now we can't say it. Thank you, Ian. I will never forget you.
Ian hill was an incredibly kind man. He was the teacher everyone hoped to have and was able to make people smile with ease.
Ian was one of the best, and smartest musicians that I ever worked with. He had excellent taste in video games and music. Thank you for lending me Zelda: Majora's Mask on Nintendo 64. It was a privilege to know you. Until we meet again my friend, Jer
