About this campaign
Canine distemper is a serious, contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of puppies and dogs. Because canine distemper virus (CDV) also impacts wildlife populations (including prides of lions and the critically endangered wild dogs — also known as painted dogs), contact between wild animals and domestic dogs can facilitate the spread of the virus.
Seeing the CDV threat on the horizon, EWASO LIONS was preparing to launch a preemptive immunization program in Samburu, Kenya called KURA'S PRIDE this January ... but distemper arrived without warning, claiming the lives of 5 wild dogs in early October.
Immediately, a soft-launch was scrambled into place and 320 dogs, cats, and donkeys received a full schedule of vaccinations (including rabies) on the 24th and 25th of October.
In order to defray some of the costs and chaos this crisis created, I set up this campaign for the Ewaso (pronounced “eh-wah-so”) team using the logo their founder and executive director, Dr. Shivani Bhalla, commissioned from me just days before the escalation. With her blessing, I now invite all of you to join Kura's Pride, and by extension, the Ewaso Lions team. Together, we can save Samburu's lions!
So why KURA'S PRIDE? Who is KURA?
Lucky for me, they made a video for that:
Supporters
I'm constantly amazed at the energy of the EWASO Lions team. And here is another ambitious project to benefit their communities. And I just love Kura!!
To borrow a line from Jeneria: "Lions are in my bloodstream now."
I want to support good folks trying to do a good thing!
This is such an impactful and crucial vaccination campaign - and because I'm a big fan of Kura from afar! Hope we get to meet in person some day :)
Because when you combine two things I love - dogs and Ewaso Lions, how could I possibly resist? And who doesn't need a red shirt during the holidays?
Go Kura! I'm excited to help your fellow dogs, their people, and all the carnivores in the Ewaso/Samburu/Northern Kenya landscape!
