About this campaign

Gerton is a small community of about 231 residents halfway between Asheville and Lake Lure that took a substantial hit during Hurricane Helene. Homes destroyed, roads washed away, trees down, and no power, water, or cell service.

I've seen this quote from Mr. Rogers circulating a lot lately, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'" Since the storm, the community has banded together to support one another, ensure every resident is accounted for, safe, and has necessary supplies. Two weeks later, access to Gerton is still restricted and it will take months, if not years to restore this community. Gerton Fire and Rescue has served as a central hub with its volunteers and others from the community working around the clock to ensure the safety and begin the cleanup process.

Lots of folks have ties to this community and want to find a way to help so I started this fundraiser to help raise money for Gerton Volunteer Fire & Rescue as they will continue to need resources moving forward. This is a marathon, not a sprint. This effort is being managed by Custom Ink and 100% of the proceeds from this fundraiser will be sent directly to Gerton Volunteer Fire & Rescue.

Growing up, my family celebrated every 4th of July and Labor Day at my grandparent's cabin in Gerton, NC. There was only a Volunteer Fire Department, Post Office, a Church, Community Center, and a small shop that sold basic necessities (Nita's) back in those days so we would spend our time playing in the creek behind the cabin, building dams with rocks and using leftover watermelon rinds to make boats that would undoubtedly sink almost immediately. We would catch lighting bugs, ride four-wheelers and dirt bikes up all up in the mountains, collect buckeyes, and shoot off bottle rockets and other fireworks my uncle would bring up from South Carolina. After dinner, we'd walk around the circle that stemmed off Bearwallow Mountain Road and at night, with virtually no light pollution, you could see a million stars up in the sky.

I spent a brief period of time living in Gerton when I first moved to the Asheville area and when I was out there, I felt like I was out in the middle of nowhere.

My grandmother owns our family cabin up in Gerton and was blessed to have the fire and rescue team bring her and her neighbor's down from McGuffey ridge when the roads were impassable. Truly an amaze community!
