About this campaign

This year, the UAF Geophysical Institute’s GeeWiz Heart Walk Team will be holding our annual GI Tract 5k race virtually and will be supporting two charities. 100% of the profits will be split evenly between the American Heart Association and the Geocare Employee Assistance Fund. With the Heart Walk event uncertain, we still wanted to join forces to support our local community. Please join us!
The American Heart Association, founded in 1924 by a group of six cardiologists, has been fighting heart disease and stroke in an effort to save and improve lives. Heart disease is the No.1 killer worldwide, and stroke ranks second globally. Join us in helping to work towards the goal of a world free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke!
GeoCare was established by GI employees in 1988 and currently provides assistance and grants to GI employees, or the direct family of those employees, to help cover unusual personal expenses, not covered by insurance, incurred because of family disasters.

Your challenge is to run or walk a 5K any time between April 26 (the planned in-person date) and May 17, and then send us a selfie of yourself finishing the race (perhaps wearing your own awesome Go the Social Distance t-shirt!) with an option to include your time. We will post all the finisher photos in a gallery in the GI Weekly Newsletter and the UAF Facebook page for everyone to enjoy. You can send the selfie and your results to uaf-gi-public-info@alaska.edu if you want to play along, but it is totally optional!
