Thanks to a matching grant from the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, we have a huge jump start toward our overall goal. To raise matching funds we are selling t-shirts! Be a part of raising awareness and making our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists everywhere while also sporting some awesome Hill Family Biking fashion.
Hill Family Biking and the Maury PTA came together to create this initiative as a way to beautify our neighborhood while also encouraging safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Chelsea Ritter-Soronen, from ChalkRiot, is creating an eye-catching design that will border each side of the crosswalk at 13th and Tennessee. The goal of the project is to make the crosswalk more visible to drivers, recognize pedestrians, children, bicycles, and everyone else that uses that crosswalk, and reduce their speed and encourage safer driving in the school corridor. This will be the first permanent crosswalk artwork in DC!
T-shirts will arrive in time for you wear for the Back to School Ride, ribbon cutting for the crosswalk art and block party over Labor Day weekend.
Hill Family Biking is a non-profit that organizes monthly family-friendly bike rides on and around Capitol Hill and serves as a community hub for all things biking on the Hill. The group hosted its first ride in April of 2023 and one of the most popular rides to date has been the Back to School ride. Coming out of the success of that ride, the organizers of Hill Family Biking wanted to incorporate an element to the 2024 edition that would have a lasting impact - and that’s how the crosswalk art project was born.
Each year, Hill Family Biking will partner with a Capitol Hill area school to install permanent street art and host an awesome block party - Maury is the first school Hill Family Biking is working with. Below is a rough rendering of where the art will be installed (design is in process) and a similar temporary installation at the Brompton store opening in Georgetown - also installed by ChalkRiot.
