About this campaign

LLS’s mission in its efforts to find cures for blood cancers and to assist patients and families as they battle these diseases. Each year, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) launches its Man & Woman of the Year fundraising campaign, and I am honored to join this year’s efforts.

There are many reasons why I am proud to support LLS’s efforts. For instance, in 2018 LLS announced that they are providing $42 Million for 80 blood cancer research teams around the world. Since 2017 the FDA has approved 37 blood cancer treatments, 31 of which were funded by LLS. LLS is also making major advances treatments for other debilitating cancers and illnesses. Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now approved to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers, noncancerous diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, & other autoimmune diseases. LLS is making a huge impact world-wide with the dollars it raises, but their research and support has greatly benefited the West Michigan community. LLS’s Children’s Initiative provides funding for pediatric therapy for children diagnosed with blood cancer. By funding research and care specifically for young patients, LLS has fought hard to protect the most vulnerable members of our community. LLS also is funding a research grant right here in Grand Rapids Michigan at Van Andel Institute. How cool is that? In order to help LLS I need YOUR help. Would you consider joining me in support of LLS and their mission by donating $5,$10,$20 or even $100 dollars? No amount is too small. From February 28, 2019 – May 9, 2019, our team goal is to raise $500,000, which will go directly to LLS in support of its longstanding goal: a world without blood cancers.

This cause is very close to my heart. On December 13. 2018, my life took a turn I wasn’t expecting and it will be a day I will never forget. This will be the day that I learned I had Cancer. My immediate thought, wasn’t why me, but it was about my children, my husband, my parents & all of those I love. Cancer is such a scary word and one that I pray you never have to hear. Today, I am ½ way through treatment and things are seeming to move in the right direction. Praise the Lord! Cancer is a very humbling experience when you are used to being so strong. I feel very fortunate that my treatment is working & I have a large support system backing me in this fight. Although I have a lot on my plate, raising 4 beautiful children, working full time and fighting cancer, I know I needed to help raise funds and awareness for LLS. I need to feel like having Cancer has a greater purpose. This is something that will feed my soul and give me the ability to share all of my blessings to others that are less fortunate than me, right here in Grand Rapids.

Like many of you, I have witnessed first-hand the debilitating effects that leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma can have on both those who suffer from these blood cancers and their friends and family. Thank you so much for supporting this incredible cause. I am grateful for your support, and I will keep you posted on how the campaign goes. Let’s work together and ERASE cancer for good!

Best,
Shannon DeYoung, Team Captain, Cancer Fighter https://pages.mwoy.org/mi/gr19/sdeyoung
