About this campaign

Here at MarEcoTel, we've been fin whale superfans for years, but sometimes it feels like they are lost in the shadows of their flashier cousins. But thanks to decades of carefully curated photo-ID data, generous contributions of citizen scientists (you know who you are!), and rockstar whales like Betty and Flukey, we are finally starting recognize just how endangered some members of this species actually are.

We are building the case that not all fin whales are anonymous oceanic nomads. Southern California has its own small, resident population of fin whales, and as the most frequently ship-struck whale species throughout the world, this little population couldn't be more vulnerable, with a home range that is filled with fast-moving vessels, from jet skis to supertankers.
