Justice for Maverick

My name is Andrew Beckham, I was deployed with the military and gave the greatest sacrifice I could for my country. While I was serving overseas, a massive corporate loophole allowed a predator to take my best friend and coupled with the issue that police gave me the lowest priority due to pets being considered property and not a living companion, I lost my best buddy and emotional support.

My 11-year-old rescue Husky, Maverick, was intentionally trapped inside my car to die by a house sitter I had hired from a popular agency. For weeks I tried to urge the police that this was serious emergency and that I was deployed, but I was only told that it was a civil matter and it’s not a priority because Maverick was “just property.” That sitter had a warrant for his arrest in another state and still made it through a platform that claimed a proper background check was done and claims no liability for their sitters, even if they kill a loved pet intentionally. Because of this corporate negligence and false advertising, Maverick suffered an unimaginable end while I was powerless thousands of miles away.

We are turning this tragedy into a firewall to protect every other family in Colorado. We are actively lobbying the Colorado State Legislature to pass "Maverick’s Law." This legislation will:

1. Force gig-economy pet-sitting platforms to use official, fingerprint-based background checks and driver’s license checks for all sitters, and to force them to use a public registry for animal and child abusers.
2. Create a statewide, public Animal Abuser Registry to permanently bar convicted animal abusers from accessing pets in any form for life.
3. Pets as Family, not property to ensure that police and justice system will have stronger importance for helping save pets and to ensure that crimes against pets are stricter. Why Buy a Shirt?
