More about Turner Syndrome

The Turner Syndrome Society of the U.S. (TSSUS) is a U.S. non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that provides health-related resources to patients, families and physicians for the diagnosis and treatment of Turner syndrome (TS). Our mission is to create awareness, promote research and provide support for all persons touched by TS. Weoffer valuable services to all those touched by TS: we hold the only national educational conference for TS, facilitate local resource groups across the country, have initiated the Turner Resource Network and TS Registry for future research, and give individuals, families and professionals the opportunity to access more resources via phone or website, www.turnersyndrome.org.

Turner syndrome (TS) is a non-inherited chromosomal disorder. It affects one in 2,000 female births and is considered a rare disease. It is a wdely varable condition. Depending on the unique genetic makeup of each person, some are affected minimally, while others display more significant symptoms and characteristics. We carefully selected the six characteristics for the t-shirt in order to give information that would give the greatest insight into TS for someone who has never heard of it. Characteristics of TS includes the following: Short stature (under 5 feet) Delayed puberty Heart defects Puffy hands and feet (especially at birth) Infertility due to nonfunctional ovaries Kidney, thyroid and liver concerns Hearing loss Recurring ear infections Learning difficulties (i.e. math) with normal intelligence Scoliosis Social difficulties

Turner syndrome can be diagnosed throughout the lifespan beginning prenatally with an amniocentesis or into adulthood with a blood test called a karyotype. It is believed that half of all diagnoses occur after age 9. The earlier the diagnosis, the better able families are to make health and educational decisions that can impact growth and development in the early years. Thank you for your support.

My daughter, who has TS is a very successful Clinical Genetics Associate. We are very proud of her. TSSUS did not exist in 1984. We are very glad it is now there for families.

In 2012, after being told we couldn't have children, my husband and I learned that I was pregnant. She was our miracle baby! Then, 6 months into the pregnancy we lost her to Turner Syndrome.
