About this campaign

The Hurricane Harvey Book Club was set up to distract little minds - to bring a little normal back to a not so normal situation. Out of love it grew and became a movement. It is a small dose of good that we are all searching for right now.

The Hurricane Harvey Book Club was originally started with 70 members who were my students, past and present, friends, and family. Never, ever, would I have imagined that it would have grown and reached to the degree that it has. It has been a blessing to so many kiddos (and their families). It is a safe space to go to forget about all of the devastation that surrounds our community. Texas is big and we have big hearts, but this little community of readers has shown me that Texas just got a little bigger with all of the support shown from around the world. Each little video has been a blessing. Each child who grabbed his or her book before evacuating so that they could post a video is braver than brave. Each one of you are the light.

Used to be a teacher - still a huge advocate for children's literacy. Having a good book can take these kiddos out of their situation, albeit temporarily. Such a worthy cause. Thank you!

Reading provides comfort through good and bad times and connects us to the larger world around us. Hurricane Harvey Book Club helped young readers see those connections for themselves. I hope it is a connection they remember forever and keep making.

As a reading teacher I can't think of a better way to support Texas during this difficult rebuilding time than to donate books and to keep a love for reading alive.
