About this campaign

UpRooted Dance is embarking upon a multi-year immersive creative research dance project about consumption and waste called "The Legacy Project." Director Keira Hart-Mendoza is working with a team of ten performers. Keira is collecting her trash for a year and will repurpose it to create an immersive installation performance space for the dance and original costumes. Together the dancers are reading "Cradle to Cradle" how things are made (and unmade) and keeping trash journals and inventories of their waste. The cast is working on creating an evening-length dance piece that metaphorically explores the topics of consumption, waste, permanency, and the three R's reducing, reusing, and recycling.

The cast will also create a series of educations workshops, outreach programs, and toolkits to take this learned information about "solid waste" and educate others. Lastly, there will be a "living/green" portion of the project where the cast will create and give away plants as reminders of the project. UpRooted Dance will unveil pieces of the project over the next few months- first at Joy of Motion's "Mixed Movement" show at Dance Place where we'll workshop a new section of the piece. Then UpRooted Dance will present a larger section at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on December 9th. Then, the cast will premiere the work in the spring on May 5th at Montgomery County MD's GREENFEST!

UpRooted is known for taking work out of the studio and stage space. We've danced in fields, in storefront windows, around maypoles, in barns, and much more! With the "Legacy Project" we're seeing our daily life as our performance space and canvas. Each of the cast members is conducting personal research and learning about "solid waste," in order to become a more educated advocate about reducing, reusing, and recycling. The cast in partnership with the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, will tour the solid waste recycling center, and go through the solid waste volunteer training to become "recycling advocates."

From this personal journal, we as a cast are creating not only dance work that will appear on the stage, we're repurposing our own trash, keeping inventories of our waste, and will create toolkits that we can use in our own creative educational workshops.

Because dancers rock, and because much of what we call “trash” really isn’t. Reuse, repurpose, recycle, upcycle! Get crafty!
