SAVE THE DATE - March 30th 2018 "Better Together" march and rally. We'll begin at Stepping Stones Growth Center and make our way through San Leandro to promote inclusion for all.
Here's our story:
Stepping Stones is a non-profit social services agency which has provided services for children and adults with developmental disabilities since 1975. Located in San Leandro, California, our 300 clientele come from all over the East Bay.
Stepping Stones provides an after school program and long days/vacation program for children. Our adult programs include Artful Steps, “Hire” Steps, and Steps Toward Wellness. The adult services we offer include intake and assessment for employment, supported employment groups, individual supported employment, job development, personal, vocational, and social adjustment tutoring, independent living services and mobility training.
Stepping Stones began as First Steps, a youth program for children with developmental disabilities. They work on vocational and life skills through hands on activities in arts & crafts, grooming & hygiene, cooking & nutrition, community integration, time management and recreation. Consumers go on field trips including an annual camping trip to Camp Arroyo.
Artful Steps has a morning and afternoon day program. Art consumers learn a variety of fine and digital art skills, including how to talk about their work and sell at a gallery. Consumers show work all over the Bay Area, from the Metropolitan Transportation Center and SOMArts in San Francisco, to local libraries, breweries and all around downtown San Leandro. There are permanent installations at Kaiser in San Leandro, Lifelong Medical in Berkeley, and Peterson Cat Construction.
Steps Toward Wellness offers several different courses: Community Involvement and Awareness, Self-Advocacy, Health & Fitness, and Cooking & Nutrition. Wellness has a community garden, a partnership with a local gym, a full serving Cafe and volunteers at an animal shelter and food bank.
Independent Living Services provides ongoing assistance to consumers who live on their own. Training for money management, self-advocacy, emergency preparedness, laundry, shopping, cooking, use of public transportation and more, is home based as well as around the community.
“Hire” Steps, our pre-vocational program, assists consumers with job readiness, professionalism, grooming, interviewing, resume completion, applications and job search. We also offer Individual and Group employment support throughout the East bay (Albany to San Ramon). Our Job Coaches assist directly hired consumers at over 30 major employers (Target, Trader Joes, Safeway, Alta Bates) to, not only, retain their positions, but expand their skills for promotion when possible.
